The Royal Academy of Arts, formed to rival the Society of Artists in 1768, hosts the most prestigious visiting art exhibitions in the 19th century additions and the Norman Foster-designed, Sackler Gallery. Among the most notable of its permanent items is Michelangelo's Madonna and Child.

A statue of the first President of the Academy, Sir Joshua Reynolds, sits in the courtyard.

Burlington House is one of the West End's few surviving 17th century mansions. It was originally a private Palladian mansion built by Sir John Denham in the 1660's, but expanded after the being purchased by the British government. The main building, at the northern end of the courtyard, houses the Royal Academy of Arts, while five learned socities occupy the western and eastern wings.

On exhibit from September 23, 2006 - January 1, 2007.was a major retrospective of the work of August Rodin (1840—1917). His monumental La Porte de l'Enfer (translated The Gates of Hell)temporarily stood in the front courtyard.

"Bifoliate" is a space-saving, wall-mounted double dishwasher that allows the user to put dirty dishes in one compartment and use the other as a shelf for clean dishes.
