Cambridge - Harvard Square: Memorial Church of Harvard University

Cambridge - Harvard Square: Memorial Church of Harvard University

The Memorial Church of Harvard, more commonly known as the Harvard Memorial Church or simply Mem Church, at 23 Harvard Yard, was dedicated on Armistice Day, November 11, 1932, in memory of the men and women of Harvard University who died in World War I. The names of 373 alumni were engraved within alongside a sculpture named The Sacrifice by Malvina Hoffman. Since then, other memorials have been established within the building commemorating those Harvardians who later died in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Memorial Church, designed by Coolidge, Shepley, Bulfinch & Abbott, was built on the site of the campus' previous building of worship, Appleton Chapel, which was built in 1858 and torn down after the 1931 Commencement. Its namesake is preserved inside Memorial Church, as the Appleton Chapel portion of the main building houses the daily service of Morning Prayer.

Harvard University (officially The President and Fellows of Harvard College), a private Ivy League university, was established in 1636 by the colonial Massachusetts legislature. Harvard is the first corporation chartered in the United States and oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. The university currently comprises ten separate academic units and has the largest financial endowment of any school in the world.

Harvard Yard, a twenty-five acre grassy area, constitutes the oldest part and the center of the campus of Harvard University. Geographically Harvard Yard is bordered to the west by Massachusetts Avenue and Peabody Street, the north by Cambridge Street, the northeast by Broadway, the east by Quincy Street, and the south by Harvard Street and Massachusetts Avenue. It contains thirteen of Harvard College's seventeen freshman dormitories, as well as four libraries, five buildings of classrooms and academic departments, and the central administrative offices of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the university. The western third of Harvard Yard, which opens onto Massachusetts Avenue at Johnston Gate, is known as the Old Yard.

This room has evolved. The client's original plan was the stippled finish on the wall and a smaller peacock tail between the two niches.

I had to post this. It was my first attempt to do a loose bridal-like design, with a peacock. I love how the poor majestical bird looks so un-characteristic of its glamor here. haha

Waterfront Wine Festival Sign in Harbor Springs

Image by Michigan Municipal League (MML)
The Michigan Municipal League represents Michigan's cities and villages and is constantly visiting them. Here are some photos of the League's recent visit to Harbor Springs. Harbor Springs is an upscale, quaint town with a wide array of restaurants, shops and art galleries beautifully set on Lake Michigan. The downtown has many of the placemaking assets the League has identified as making up vibrant communities. For more about placemaking go to the League’s website mml.org and visit the page about our Center for 21st Century Communities: www.mml.org/resources/21c3/about.html. You can also visit a placemaking blog by League CEO Dan Gilmartin called www.economicsofplace.com/ and our new placemaking page at mml.org/placemaking. In addition, the League’s 2012 Convention taking place in October on Mackinac Island will focus on how Michigan communities of all shapes and sizes can implement placemaking assets. It’s easier than you may think. For details on the 2012 Tools of Placemaking Convention go to convention.mml.org (www.mml.org/events/annual_convention/).

Dummies And People

Another scene from the UIAH Masters of Art exhibition. I waited a while in case people would show up under the dummies, and sure enough they did. The dummies are wearing a set of clothes designed by a graduate. Her name was Svetlana; I don't remember the last name. She wore an impressive red dress for the ceremony.

Interpreter

One of the people being celebrated was one guy who got his doctorate (Not the one in the picture). He had become deaf. His research was about making stuff accessible to people who can't hear, see, or understand the language. By all accounts, his work made a quite an impression. This guy was interpreting the proceedings into sign language for his benefit -- and, I would expect, any other deaf people in the audience.

A scene from the University of Industrial Arts of Helsinki "Masters of Art" exhibition. Like the next few. It was a good exhibition, both in the way it was set up and from the stuff that was being exhibited. Beats many exhibitions I've seen in far more prestigious venues.
